Carbon fibre alone is absolutely no use on its own for a bike, it’s nothing but a strand of hair. You first have to impregnate it with resin. The result: a super strong and feather light composite.
The matrix
The composite material is made up of various components. The fibres absorb the forces. The synthetic matrix binds the fibres, and together with the fibres forms a light and strong material.
Nice and rigid
The advantage of using composites in bikes is that the frames are more rigid. So the frame doesn’t bend back and forwards during pedalling. Because that uses frictional energy. Pros want to put all their energy into moving forward. Logical. That’s the low-down on carbon fibre!
