Microcrystalline wax is derived from petroleum. It’s used a lot in cosmetics. It’s colourless, keeps the liquid and oil components from separating, makes lipstick easy to apply and repels water.
Microcrystalline waxes are composed of fine crystals of straight-chain and randomly branched saturated alkalines. They melt from 60°C up.
The microcrystalline wax binds the lipstick’s ingredients together. As an emulsifier it mixes water and oil, just as with butter. It’s also opalescent: it reduces the translucence. That’s why you need to use so little. And thanks to the wax’s low viscosity the lipstick is always easy to apply. That’s nice.
